New Section for IOVS

Robert N. Frank, Editor-in-Chief

This month, IOVS introduces a new section: Research Opportunities. Articles will be published periodically and will usually include supplementary materials that will be available online only. ARVO will make the online version of the articles and the related supplementary materials in this section available to the public without charge immediately on publication.

The inaugural article is the result of the ARVO/Pfizer Research Institute meeting held in April 2005 in conjunction with the ARVO Annual Meeting. The Institute is funded by The ARVO Foundation for Eye Research through a grant from Pfizer Ophthalmics. As the introduction explains, specific topics and speakers are independently selected based on submitted proposals. The series of conferences is intended to address cross- and interdisciplinary vision research. The 2005 topic is angiogenesis.

The next article in this section will be published in the spring of 2006 and reports the findings and opportunities identified at the U.S.–Indo Workshops on Collaborative Research, which were sponsored by ARVO and funded through a cooperative agreement with the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, United States, and the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The workshops were held in February 2005 in Hyderabad, India, and in April 2005 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, just before the ARVO Annual Meeting.

The criteria for an article that is being considered for this section are: The meeting and overview must focus on new opportunities for future research and must contain recommendations for the kinds of research to be conducted.

Only results of meetings cosponsored by ARVO will be considered.
A single, overview article of approximately 30 pages, which may include a synopsis of presentations, must be submitted electronically and will undergo peer review.
Supplementary data, which may include longer versions of the presentations, may be submitted for online publication only and will be reviewed with the article.
The article must be submitted within 6 months of the event.
The article must include new opportunities for future research and recommendations for research.
Publication charges will be assessed.
The article will be published in the print and online editions.

IOVS looks forward to bringing new opportunities for national and international research to ARVO members and readers around the world. Please contact the Editorial Office with specific questions.
