Cover: The Café Wall Illusion. Offset elements induce strong perceived-orientation shifts in the horizontal "mortar" that separates the elements. The orientation interaction occurs over only a limited spatial extent. The development of an electrophysiological correlate of this short-range lateral interaction is the topic of the article by Skoczenski and Norcia on page 2411 of this issue.
