About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Neural stem cells derived from the adult rat hippocampus and expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) were transplanted to the subretinal space of a rat following 90 min of acute ischemia induced by raising the intraocular pressure. After 7 wk, GFP expressing cells (green) had engrafted, migrated to the retinal cellular layers and undergone limited morphological differentiation. This image is from the peripheral margin of the ischemic injury. Nuclei in the cellular layers are stained with DAPI (blue), and the plexiform layers are labeled with an antibody to the presynaptic protein, synaptophysin (red). Photo courtesy of D.W. Rickman, Duke University Eye Center.
