About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover: Freeze-fracture replica of the choriocapillaris reveal large expanses of densely packed fenestrae (75-85 nm diameter) interspersed between a network of branching nonfenestrated membrane. This freeze-fracture replica depicts the P-face (protoplasmic face) of the retinal aspect of the hamster choriocapillaris (magnification: x6,700). Choroidal capillary endothelial cells develop processes that arise from the nonfenestrated, focally thickened regions of the endothelial cells that extend down into Bruch's membrane. The apical portions of these endothelial cell processes typically break off during the replication process and are often visualized as "stumps" (bottom right). See Guymer et al. on page 1660 of this issue.
